One-time Codes
What It Is
Section titled “What It Is”A one-time code is three words that work once and last one hour. You paste them into any message. The person who gets the message enters the words at verify.trusted.codes and sees who sent them: your name, your photo, your trust score and some facts about your account.
The code proves that the message is from you. It proves nothing about the message or a file. You cannot add a note or a label to a code. One-time codes are free on every account.
Make a Code
Section titled “Make a Code”Codes are made with the code generator, a small page that you install on your phone or your computer. Until you have set it up, this page shows only the steps for it (see below). Once it is set up, open One-time codes in the menu and select New code. The three words appear. Copy them and paste them into your message. Making a code needs a connection. You can make 20 codes a day.
The first time, the page prepares this browser. That takes about 3 minutes. The page says when it is ready.
Allow a Code Generator
Section titled “Allow a Code Generator”The code generator is a small page that makes codes with one tap. You set it up once for each device, on a phone or a computer.
- On this page, select Get words. Three words and the address of the page appear.
- On the device you want to pair, open the address in the browser and install the page as an app. On an iPhone or iPad, select Share, then Add to Home Screen. On a Mac in Safari, choose File, then Add to Dock. Open the new icon.
- In the new icon, type the three words. Do this in the installed icon, not in a browser tab: a page in an iPhone tab loses its pairing when you install it.
- A request appears on this page: Pair this device? with the device name, the time, the country and a four-digit number. The same number is on the page on your device. If the numbers are equal and you started the pairing, select Allow. If not, select Deny.
- The page on your device now prepares itself. This takes up to about 3 minutes. Then it shows New code.
If the request warns that it came from another country than the one you started from, or from an unknown country, select Deny unless you know why.
If you deleted the generator from your Home Screen, select Set up the code generator again below your devices and repeat the steps.
Your Devices and Codes
Section titled “Your Devices and Codes”The page lists your devices and your codes. You can have up to 5 devices.
To remove a device, for example after you lose a phone, select Remove next to it. Removing a device also withdraws all of its open codes. A withdrawn code no longer works.
How the phone page is set up is described in One-time Codes.
